“FamilySearch's Research Wiki” presentation at MPAAGHS Monthly Meeting

July 11, 2026

Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society (MPAAGHS) will hold its monthly meeting virtually on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM Eastern Time. The meeting will feature a talk by genealogist Karen M. Skelton entitled "FamilySearch's Research Wiki - An Essential Companion."

Have you ever concluded that an ancestor must have moved or died because they were not in the records where you expected them to be? What if they were there all along - but it's the records that "moved or died"? Karen Skelton will offer a presentation on how to use FamilySearch's Research Wiki to learn what records were created for your specific location: What years do they cover? Are there gaps in the coverage? Are they digitized, or do you need to visit in person - and if so, where? Knowing what records exist, and where, will save you hours of fruitless searches or inaccurate conclusions.

Karen Skelton has been active in the world of genealogy and social history for 15 years. She specialized in Irish records research for a number of years. After moving to North Carolina in 2020 she found a way to combine her two passions of social and racial justice with genealogy and history: by working in the area of reparative genealogy. This helps the descendants of both enslavers and enslaved who are linked through the land, records, and oftentimes kinship. She now engages in this work fulltime to help people who want to have a more complete and honest account of their family history. Karen is an alumna of the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute (MAAGI), and a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
